Before going out for my daily walk, I checked the weather station and found it was a bit chilly this morning. So I bundled myself up to be nice and toasty. I hate cold and I especially hate how the cold makes me shake twice as bad as normal. So on went my long stretch pants, a long sleeved shirt, a sweatshirt, a fake down vest, and of course my gloves and then out the door I cheerfully skipped. (yeah right)
As soon as the first blast of cold wind hit, so did the shaking, but I ignored it and quickly upped to a brisk walking pace to get warmer. At my usual spot, I began running. (I call it running, but I have been informed by an acquaintance (jerk) who really runs that it's actually a very slow jog... hhhmmfff...) OK, so I began my slow jog! :P
My body was doing more than it's fair share of whining as I jogged, but I told it to shut up and keep running cause I wasn't stopping - so there! As my feet heavily padded along the pavement, I heard someone coming up behind me and it was quickly quite evident their pace was way faster than mine. Sure enough a young girl sprinted pass me leaving me in the dust as I moved to the side so she could pass!
"PPFFTT...so what!!!... she's young... she should be faster. Lets see how fast she runs when she is my age!!!!"
Then...as I watched her fade away out of site, the real kicker hit...
Not only was she running faster....
She was running faster AND she was wearing shorts and a thin long sleeved T-shirt...
Shorts - ladies and gentlemen!!!! And she didn't seem the least bit bothered by the cold.
While at the same time, I am dragging along, bunndled in 3 layers, still shaking like a leaf because it's freezing!
Alright! I get it already!!! I am old!!!!
But you know what?
Next week when she has pneumonia, I am going to be out running... SLOW jogging...whatever!

Now THAT is a positive attitude if I ever read one....lol Hey, you have to do what you have to do, and to hell with the rest of the population. Keep doing what you're doing. (caring1) Dan
ReplyDeleteMy only consolation was that a young man later passed me while running in the opposite direction who also had shorts on, but at least he had the decency to wear tights under them. (Do you call them tights when a male has them on?). Anyways he was also running (jogging) at a slower pace. Albeit, his slower pace looked much smoother than mine. I look like I am jogging with lead feet (cause I am) and he looked like "twinkle toes" - you know, they look like their feet barely touch the ground! The tights didn't help his manly image IMHO - but hey at least HE was smart enough to be warm! lol
ReplyDeleteWill you judge me, too, if I tell you that I run in shorts(albeit with tights) during winter? :D
ReplyDeleteTry running in real workout gear! They're made to keep heat in so that you won't be "shaking like a leaf." haha
True story: When I first started running, I thought that I was fairly awesome, running about without stopping to gasp for air was quite a feat. One day, I see my neighbor, a retired woman in her late 60's, shoot past me while I was taking a small walk break. I know that there was no reason to be so embarrassed but I felt like my pride stung a bit:P
One day, I got to talk with her, turns out that she runs 4-6 miles daily and she's been a runner her whole life. She was one of my running inspirations!
Hi CM,
ReplyDeleteMade it onto your site! And I thought that was an acheivement. Hahaha.
You start by saying a daily walk but break out into a run ...... jog whatever you want to call it - the point is it's fantastic and I'm full of admiration for you.
Now my daily walk is simply that, a walk, not a glimse of a jog slow or not to be seen. I'm going further (3 miles today!) and a little faster, I can muster 'brisk' on the first mile which sadly degenerates into more of a limp on my last mile - but I get there.
You might be cold but you are certainly not old and you're one of my inspirations to keep going out there - wrap up warm hold your head up high and know that you are doing great!
Julie
Fay, At least you have the sense to wear tights. So I will only judge you a little (for being younger and faster) lol
ReplyDeleteI do run in workout clothes, at least I thought they were. Any specific suggestions. I am trying to find a lightweight jacket that keeps the heat in. I thought I found one at Costcos, but it is too stiff. Usually, I layer - so I can take them off if/when i get too hot. (Now I sound like Goldilocks!!!)
That is an awesome story about your neighbor - at least from my perspective. ha ha She is inspiring me too. HHHmmm, maybe I can speed by a youngster when I am 60...wearing shorts (and tights)(and pants, and a sweatshirt, and...) Did I mention I don't like to be cold?
Welcome Julie! I am so happy you made it here and even happier that you commented.
ReplyDeleteI hope you admire yourself for how far you have come physically. I think it is great that you have worked up to 3 miles already. What you are doing is exactly how I started out. Walking a little, than adding a little more distance and a little more speed. Step by step is how it works. So pat yourself on the back Julie and keep it up! Thumbs up! And there are some days when I limp home too. I think we are both going to always have those days sometimes. So what - we will limp home with a smile (or grimace?) lol
I keep wondering if I will be able to keep up the running during the bad weather months. I may drop back to just walking. We'll see! Will take it day by day!
I love your sense of humour CM. Nice post. Nice to see you still using those ASCII smilies (tongue pokes) too. ;-)
ReplyDeleteThe male jogger may have been wearing compression pants. I have some compression garments myself. Studies have shown that they help with muscle recovery, and many athletes (yes, I like to wear them and pretend I'm an athlete) use them for this purpose. You can wear them while you work out, but I think the most benefit is gained if you wear them afterwards, while your muscles are recovering.
Or maybe he's just a guy who likes to wear tights. Well hey… who are we to judge.
Yup - you taught me well Donald! :P lol
ReplyDeleteCompression pants - a new one for me. I learn something new every day. You know, come to think of it, I have actually seen quite a few of that same look, so you may have a point. OK - point taken, I am being a tad too judgmental here. But still - the girl in shorts - in freezing weather...???
